KERRVILLE, Texas — Rain delays extended the Southwestern women's tennis team's reign as defending SCAC champions an extra 2.5 hours. Once the courts dried, the No. 13-ranked Trinity Tigers defeated the No. 16-ranked Pirates 5-0 in the championship match.
Doubles were vital in last year's Southwestern championship run, taking two of three, but Trinity roared back with a vengeance, making a clean sweep.
Trinity's first-year tandem of Olivia Kim and Ruth Hill set the tone with an 8-3 win over Alli Ziehm and Emma Kesterson at No. 2 doubles, avenging an 8-5 loss to Southwestern's All-American duo in the ITA Fall Regionals.
Cate Cushing and Megan Flores avenged their own 8-6 ITA loss to Nina Mitrofanova and Lydia Lee with a decisive 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles.
Taylor Despriet and Lauren Chisholm battled in a back-and-forth match against Ellie Hughes and Elodie Richards before losing 8-6.
Hill put Trinity on the brink with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Kesterson at No. 3 singles, and Cushing clinched with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Despriet at No. 2 singles.
Southwestern drops to 16-5 with the loss. The NCAA will announce its team tournament field on Monday, May 9, and its individual qualifiers on Wednesday, May 11.
