Pirates’ Tournament Run Ends in SAA Semifinals

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS — The Southwestern University women's tennis team turned in a strong showing at the SAA Championships, advancing to the semifinals after a dominant 4-0 sweep of Berry College in the quarterfinals before falling to Sewanee, 5-0, to conclude the 2025-2026 season.

QUARTERFINALS – Southwestern 4, Berry 0

In the quarterfinal round, the Pirates wasted no time setting the tone against Berry, securing the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The duo of Katia Childs and Lilly Perkins cruised to a 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles, while Kimberly Duncan and Addison Powell followed with a 6-3 win at No. 3. The No. 1 doubles match featuring Isa Cepeda and Daryl Locke was left unfinished with Berry leading 4-3.

Southwestern carried that momentum into singles play, where they clinched the match with three straight-set victories. Kimberly Duncan led the charge at No. 3 singles with a commanding 6-1, 6-0 win. Lilly Perkins added another point at No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-3 decision, and Addison Powell sealed the team victory at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-3 performance. Matches at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 5 singles went unfinished with the Pirates in competitive positions.

SEMIFINALS – Sewanee 5, Southwestern 0

Facing Sewanee in the semifinals, Southwestern battled but ultimately came up short against a strong Tigers squad. Sewanee claimed the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, despite Duncan and Powell earning a solid 6-3 victory at No. 3.

In singles play, Sewanee secured the match with straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 3, and No. 5, along with a win by default at No. 6. Isa Cepeda competed at the top spot, while Kimberly Duncan and Addison Powell fought at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively. Two additional matches at No. 2 and No. 4 singles went unfinished.

Despite the semifinal result, Kimberly Duncan was recognized for her outstanding performance throughout the tournament, earning a spot on the SAA All-Tournament Team.

The Pirates close the 2025-2026 campaign with a strong postseason run and valuable experience gained on the championship stage.
