Pirates Split the Day in California

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Southwestern University Pirates men's tennis team recovered from its first loss of the season to defeat Swarthmore 7-2 on Friday.

Southwestern swept doubles with Alexis Dimanche and Hunter Bajoit pulling out a hard-fought 8-5 victory in doubles. Carlos Esteban and Alonso Fernandez struggled early but scored six straight to take an 8-6 victory.

"Carlos and Alonso coming back from 2-6 down to steak that third doubles point changed everything," Head Coach Billy Porter said. "But Jeremy, Tashawn, Tyler, and Vesko were the real difference makers in this battle. Without their relentless cheering and support we wouldn't have pulled this out."

Dimanche dropped the No. 1 singles set but the Pirates pulled off the next three, getting a big win from Dean Dulthummon in three sets.

"Dean's clinch was so big as things got very tight after we took four first sets," Porter said.

The Pirates improved to 9-1 on the season. They will resume action at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday morning.
