Pirates bounce back to trump Caltech on Saturday, 5-2

PASADENA, Calif. – The Southwestern University men's tennis team bounced back on Saturday with a 5-2 victory over Caltech.

The Pirates (7-5) picked up two points in doubles action to take the early lead.

Grant Gideon and Nickoloz Snovely logged an 8-2 win at the top spot, while Will Ellis and Sam McCready paired up for an 8-6 victory at the second position.

In singles play, Southwestern won three of four contests that reached conclusion to clinch the match.

Nick Farmen gave the Pirates a 3-1 advantage, as the sophomore earned a 6-4, 6-0 triumph at No. 2 singles.

Snovely followed with a 6-3, 6-2 decision at the top spot to give SU a 4-1 lead.

After the Beavers (3-3) picked up a point at the sixth position, Gideon finished off his opponent with a 7-5, 6-1 win at the third spot to end the contest.

The fourth and fifth singles went unfinished.

Southwestern will conclude its West Coast trip Sunday with a stop in Los Angeles to face Occidental. First serve for the in-region tilt is slated for 11 a.m. (CDT) at the McKinnon Family Tennis Center.
