Pirates split Saturday matches

GEORGETOWN – The Southwestern University men's tennis team split a pair of matches Saturday knocking off Southwest Christian 5-4 after falling 8-1 to Texas Lutheran at the Marvin D. Henderson Sr. Tennis Courts.

The Pirates were able to stay above the .500 mark with the split improving to 6-4 on the season as they lost just their first home match of the season.

Niko Snovely improved to 8-1 on the season as he battled cramps through most of his morning match to take a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 win at No. 1 singles. Snovely's win was the only point for the Pirates in their morning match with the Bulldogs.

Egan Cornachione battled in a tough No. 2 singles match with Sanio Dizdarevic, but fell 7-5, 6-2. Cornachione and Edward Yu also lost the closet doubles match of the morning, 8-4, at the No. 2 position as well.

The afternoon saw the Pirates battle back from an early 2-1 defecit from doubles play.

Southwest Christian took No. 1 and No. 2 doubles as Niko Snovely and Alex Wong earned the first point at the No. 3 position. Snovely and Wong picked up an 8-2 win that helped both players cruise to wins in singles action.

Snovely recovered from early morning tightness to pick up a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 1 singles spot in the lineup.

Wong nearly followed winning at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-2 over Iago Bonaventura and giving the Pirates a 3-2 lead in the match.

Southwestern closed out the win as Cornachione and Alvaro Rojas took the final two wins at No. 2 and No. 5 singles, respectively. Cornachione won 6-2, 6-2 as Rojas battled Will Long for a tough 6-2, 7-5 win at the NO. 5 position and match clinching point.
