Southwestern women drop heartbreaker at UMHB

BELTON, Texas – Southwestern dropped a heartbreaker Friday falling 5-4 at Mary Hardin-Baylor in women's college tennis action from the Yvonne Li Tennis Center.

Southwestern (6-3) picked up its first point at the No. 3 doubles position with Marieke Visser and Heba Abdul fighting to a 9-7 win. UMHB (9-4) used a late run at the bottom of the lineup in singles as the Crusaders took points at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.

Marieke Visser helped the Pirates to a pair of wins as she battled to a 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 win at No. 4 singles.

The Pirates also got wins from Gabby Hunt at No. 2 singles and Virginia Stofer at No. 6 singles. However, the Crusaders closed out the match taking wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 5 singles to edge Southwestern in the match.

Hunt knocked off AshLee Bilbo, 6-4, 6-0, for her win at No. 2 singles while Stofer rallied back to win 7-6, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

Southwestern will look to get back on the winning track Saturday with a double-header against Schreiner in the morning at the Henderson Tennis Courts. The Pirates will host NCAA-II Texas A&M-Kingsville in the afternoon.
