Box Score GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Pirates had great looks down the stretch
of the game, putting together well-executed attacks, but were
unable to score the game winning goal as their overtime match
against UC Santa Cruz ended in a tie.
In the beginning of the first half the Banana Slugs seemed to be
getting more looks at the goal but Southwestern was the first to
strike. Danielle
Madison stole a pass from UCSC, dribbled through the midfiled
and played a perfect ball to a streaking Ashley Gallegos (pictured)
in the middle of the field. Gallegos got control of the ball and
dribbled two touches before perfectly placing her shot into the
lower right-hand corner of the goal, putting SU up 1-0.
Not five minutes later UCSC evened the score on an unassuming
shot that rolled past Sarah Nonaka and
in to the lower corner of the net, tying the score at 1-1 and that
is how the half would end.
Both sides had good looks at the goal in the second half and the
Pirates had a couple of well-organized attacks that just didn't
result in a goal. UCSC just about pulled ahead on a ball played
ahead to their forward who took a lunging shot that landed in the
back of the net, but she was called offsides to keep the game even
at 1-1.
As overtime got underway both sides had good looks at goal and
the Pirates had three consecutive corners that were fruitless. With
just under two minutes to play in the first overtime SU had their
best look on a free kick from the right side that lofted into the
box bounced around and Maria
Pollifrone's shot careened off the post and out of bounds.
Santa Cruz came screaming down the field and got a good look
themselves, but their shot sailed left of the goal, ending the
threat.
Neither team was able to close out the game with a goal and the
contest ended in a 1-1 tie. Southwestern moves to 3-1-1 on the year
while UCSC moves to 0-6-1.
The Pirates open up conference action with their next game as
they head to Rhodes College on September 24th.
