Box Score GEORGETOWN, Texas - With nine seniors playing their final home match of the season the Southwestern women's soccer game was unable to pull out the win as they fell 2-1 to Sewanee on Sunday afternoon. With the loss SU falls to 8-7-1 overall and 4-4 in the SCAC.
Sewanee struck first in the middle of the first period as Tiki Slay found Faith Spencer for the first goal of the match. The Pirates were unable to even the score prior to halftime despite some great looks at goal and went into the break down 1-0.
Southwestern wasn't short on goal scoring opportunities, especially in the second half. Danielle Madison played an aggressive through ball to Amy Douglas who broke free from the pack but Sewanee's keeper just beat her to the ball and cleared out the threat before Douglas could capitalize.
The Pirates evened the count with 24 minutes remaining in the second period when Maria Pollifrone was fouled deep in the box and gave SU an indirect free kick. First-year Lindsay Jakszta lofted the ball into the middle of the box, right in front of the goal to an awaiting Douglas who knocked it home.
Sewanee pulled ahead with 15 minutes to play when the ball bounced around in the box, Nonaka made a diving save and SU was unable to clear as Sewanee's Colhoun tapped it into the back of the net for the go-ahead goal. SU had another good look on a corner but the threat was cleared out by Sewanee's keeper and Berkeley Mengwasser's follow was saved as well.
Southwestern continued to press but was unable to even the count as they fell in their final home match 2-1.
SU had eight shots to the Tigers' 13 but had two more corner opportunities (6-4). The Pirates hit the road for their final games of the season as they play at Centre on Friday at 6:00 pm and close out the year at DePauw on Sunday at 10:00 am.
