Pirates Set Up Championship Showdown with Trinity by Beating Sewanee 1-0

The SU women's soccer team took down the University of the South-Sewanee 1-0 on Sunday (Oct. 28) afternoon in Sewanee, TN, setting up the Pirates' final regular season game against Trinity University as the deciding game for the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship.

The game remained tied throughout the first half. The Pirates held a 10-2 advantage in shot in the period and put five of them on goal. It was not until the second period at the 69:32 mark when first-year Amy Douglas (Missouri City, TX/Hightower HS) scored the game-winner with an assist from junior Casey Grier (Spring, TX/Klein Collins HS).

Junior goalkeeper Eryn Snyder (Spring Branch, TX/Smithson Valley HS) recorded the shutout with three saves. Southwestern has now recorded shutouts in its last six road games. Douglas, the SCAC leader in points, is now tied for the team lead with 10 goals on the season.

The Pirates held a large 18-4 advantage in shots and had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. SU is now 13-4 overall and 7-1 in the conference while Sewanee falls to 6-6-1 and 3-4-1.

The Pirates take on Trinity on Friday (Nov. 2) at 6:00 p.m. with the winner taking the SCAC championship and receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament.
