GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Southwestern University men's tennis team opened its 2026 season in strong fashion on Saturday afternoon, earning a 6–1 victory over East Texas Baptist University.
ETBU claimed the opening point by sweeping all three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles, Sam Black and Max Karseno defeated Bernie Clemente and Parth Patel, 6–3. Mark Armbruster and Erick Van Zyl followed with a 6–3 win over Ashton Ellis and Christo Langford at No. 2, while Jaco Snyman and Jacob Daniell edged Landon Sosebee and Sebastian Herrera in a closely contested No. 3 match, 7–6, 7–5.
The Pirates responded emphatically in singles play, winning all six matches to secure the season-opening victory. Nathan Qi set the tone at No. 1 singles with a decisive 6–2, 6–2 win over Sam Black. At No. 2, Ashton Ellis rebounded after dropping the first set to defeat Jaco Snyman, 4–6, 6–3, 6–2.
Nolan Alvarez added a straight-set victory at No. 3 singles, topping Mark Armbruster 6–2, 6–4. Parth Patel followed with a three-set win at No. 4, defeating Erick Van Zyl 6–1, 1–6, 6–0.
One of the most competitive matches of the afternoon came at No. 5 singles, where Bernie Clemente outlasted Max Karseno in a marathon three-set battle, 7–6(7), 6–7(2), 7–6(10). Christo Langford capped off the match at No. 6 singles with a dominant 6–0, 6–1 victory over Jacob Daniell.
