Pirates Shine at ITA Regionals, Show Depth and Determination Across the Draws

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Southwestern University men's tennis team turned in an impressive all-around performance at their ITA Regionals showing, proving their depth and competitive edge with strong results in both singles and doubles play. Ten Pirates competed in singles, with all ten advancing to the A Draw—a clear sign of the team's overall talent and consistency. The Pirates opened the tournament by winning 9 of 10 first-round matches, setting the tone for a dominant showing across the board.

TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS

  • In singles, Nathan Qi entered as the No. 4 seed, while Ashton Ellis and Porter Arens held No. 9 seeds, and Parth Patel and Bernie Clemente came in as No. 13 seeds. 

  • Ellis, Arens, and Qi each advanced to the Round of 16, with Qi continuing his impressive run by winning a dramatic three-set battle over Trinity's Ethan Flores, clinching the match with a 6-4 final set. 

  • Qi went on to win another three-set marathon to earn a spot in the semifinals, where he faced off against the tournament's top seed from Trinity. In a tightly contested match, Qi ultimately fell 6-3, 7-5, capping a stellar run that highlighted his grit and resilience.

  • Doubles play also saw success across the board, as all five Pirate teams claimed opening-round wins in the A Draw. 

  • The duo of Landon Sosebee and Sebastian Herrera delivered a major upset by defeating the No. 5 seed in their first match. 

  • The teams of Arens/Snyman and Clemente/Patel each advanced to the quarterfinals, where they faced off in an all-Pirate clash. Arens and Snyman emerged with a solid 8-4 win to reach the semifinals, where they came up just short against the No. 1 seed, falling 7-5 in a tightly contested pro-set tiebreaker.

UP NEXT

  • The Pirates will take some well-earned rest and return to the courts for focused training this winter as they prepare for a highly anticipated spring season.
