Pirates Snag Two Top Awards in All-SCAC Voting

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

For the fourth time in five seasons Coach Angela Froboese was named as the SCAC Coach-of-the-Year. Joining her in the major honors was Kelsey Kingston who was named the Newcomer-of-the-Year.

Trinity took the two other major awards as Brooke Sanchez was named as the Player-of-the-Year and Sydney Friday was honored as the Pitcher-of-the-Year.

Six Pirates garnered First Team All-SCAC and three Second Team All-SCAC honors.

Kingston, a first-year right-hander from Kingswood, Texas, led the SCAC during the regular season in wins (22) and strikeouts (164) and was second in earned run average (2.27) and opposing batting average (.253). Her 22 wins are already the most by a first-year pitcher in SCAC history and the fifth-most by any pitcher. A four-time SCAC Pitcher-of-the-Week selection during the 2013 season, Kingston is the second Southwestern pitcher in three years to earn the league's Newcomer-of-the-Year honor. SU's Lauren Zearfoss was recognized as the top newcomer in 2011.

In just five seasons at Southwestern, Froboese has built the Pirate softball program into a West Region power. Included among her impressive accomplishments, Froboese guided Southwestern to a SCAC title and NCAA Regional berth in 2010 in just the second season of the program's existence. That season, the Pirates lost in the semifinals to eventual national champion East Texas Baptist University. A four-time SCAC Coach-of-the-Year selection (2009, 2010, 2011, 2013), Froboese won her 200th career game earlier this season and has a career mark of 22-127 (.618) heading into this weekend's conference tournament.

Abigail O'Connor, a senior catcher from San Antonio, Texas, has had an outstanding senior season at the plate for the Pirates. She was second in the conference with a .467 batting average to earn her first First Team All-SCAC selection.

Ashleigh Scott, a sophomore third baseman from Pflugerville, Texas, earned her first First Team All-SCAC pick this season. She was 15th in the conference with a .328 batting average, tenth in hits (42), sixth in runs batted in (30) and placed second in hits against conference opponents with 27 in conference play.  Scott was a Second Team All-SCAC pick in 2012.

Outfielders Tessa Galloway and Michele Ramos secured two of the three First Team All-SCAC outfield slots. Galloway, a junior from Spring, Texas,  was second in the conference in total bases (81) and runs batted in (38) and in the top ten in batting average, on base percentage and slugging percentage. Galloway was an Honorable Mention All-SCAC pick in 2012. Ramos, a first-year from Houston, Texas, was fourth in the SCAC in homeruns (3) and sixth in runs batted in (15) in conference play.

Kayla Irvin, a junior utility player from Houston, Texas, earned her second First Team All-SCAC selection, also earning the award in 2011. Irvin was second in the SCAC in runs batted in, bringing home 38 in the regular season this year.

Kingston, a first-year pitcher from Kingston, Texas, was first in the conference in innings pitched (186.1), strikeouts (168), appearances (28), starts (35), and wins (21).

Jessica Bryant (1B), Stacy Rosengren (2B), Karen Ramirez (SS) took home Second Team All-SCAC selections on Friday evening.

Southwestern opened the SCAC Championship as the #2 seed and defeated Centenary College 7-6 on Friday night to advance to the semifinal against Trinity on Saturday at noon.
