GEORGETOWN, TEXAS – The Southwestern University Pirates softball team opened postseason play on Thursday afternoon with a hard-fought battle against Rhodes College in the opening round of the Southern Athletic Association Tournament. Competing in their first season as members of the SAA, the Pirates battled until the very end in a tense pitchers' duel before falling 1–0 in walk-off fashion, sending Southwestern into the losers bracket of the double-elimination tournament.Â
GAME FINAL – Rhodes 1, Southwestern 0Â
Southwestern and Rhodes traded scoreless innings throughout a tightly contested postseason matchup, with the Pirates leaning on another gritty performance in the circle from Sophia Ytuarte to stay within striking distance all afternoon.
The Pirates threatened early despite being limited offensively, and Southwestern continued to apply pressure throughout the game. Macey Gilman recorded the Pirates' lone hit with a double, while Allie Fields made history on the basepaths. Fields swiped her 21st stolen base of the season, officially breaking the Southwestern single-season program record. The junior outfielder also reached base after being hit by a pitch, while Kaydence Garza added another hit-by-pitch to help spark the offense.
Ytuarte delivered a strong outing in the circle, holding Rhodes scoreless through six innings while working through traffic and keeping the Lynx off balance. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Jasmyn Stanley lined a double into left center to bring home the winning run and secure the 1–0 decision for Rhodes.
