200th Career Win for Coach Froboese as Softball Stymies Schreiner

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Coach Froboese hits the 200 career win mark as pitcher Kelsey Kingston and the Pirate defense lock down Schreiner in consecutive games 6-1, 2-1.

In game one of the doubleheader, Linsay Biggers led off the bottom of the third with a slap single towards third base.  She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Abigail O'Connor.  Then Karen Ramirez reached on a fielder's choice when the third baseman unsuccessfully tried to tag Biggers out coming into third.  Biggers scored on a bunt by Ashleigh Scott that was mishandled by the pitcher.  Ramirez advanced to third on the play and Scott moved to second on the throw.    Galloway followed with a 2 RBI double to left field.  She scored on a single up the middle by Kayla IrvinVictoria Vasquez entered the game as a pinch runner for Irvin and advanced to third on a double to right field by Stacy Rosengren.  A batter later, Caroline Young hit a double of her own to left field to bring home Vasquez.  The last run in the inning was scored by Rosengren, who crossed the plate on a ball to the shortstop hit by Michelle Ramos to put the Pirates up 6-0.

The Mountaineers' Molenaar led off the top of the fourth with a double to right center field.  She advanced to third on a stolen base and scored on a single to center field by Kimmons to make it 6-1. 

The Pirates' defense and pitcher Kelsey Kingston kept Schreiner in check for the remainder of the game.  Kingston gave up only the one run on three hits and struck out ten batters en route to the complete game win.  The team was led offensively by Tessa Galloway, who went 2-4 with a double, two RBI, and scored a run.

The victory was the 200th of her career for Southwestern Head Coach Angela Froboese.

In game two of the afternoon, Southwestern opened things up in the bottom of the third inning. Ramirez reached on an infield single to the shortstop and later stole second base.  Scott drew a walk to give the Pirates' runners on first and second with two outs.  Southwestern loaded the bases after Galloway was hit by a pitch.  Irvin followed with a bloop single to right field that scored two runs and gave the Pirates the 2-0 lead.

Schreiner's Alcozer led off the top of the fourth with a double to left center field.  She scored on a single by Kimmons to cut it to a 2-1 game. 

It was a tight game down the stretch and the Mountaineers threatened again late.  Morris led off with a single up the middle and was replaced on first by pinch runner, Moody.  She took second after Sultemeier was hit by a pitch.  Nunez entered the game to pinch run for Sultemeier on first base.  In a quick series of events, Harris grounded out to first base and moments later Nunez was called out as she was off the bag at second with the ball in the pitcher's circle to end the game at 2-1.

Kelsey Kingston struck out ten batters again on her way to her second complete game win of the day.  Kayla Irvin led the Southwestern offense by going 1-3 with two RBI.  The Pirates advance to a 9-7 record and Schreiner remains winless at 0-8.

The team travels to Tucson, Arizona, for a tournament and their first match up pits them against Alfred on Tuesday, March 12th beginning at 10:00am.
