Box Score CONWAY, Ark. - The Pirates used a steady flow of goals and once
again dominated the shot and corner kick counts en route to a 3-2
win over Hendrix College to begin the SCAC conference season
undefeated. Southwestern now sits at 4-3 on the year and 2-0 in
conference.
The Warriors shocked the Pirates by getting on the board first,
scoring early into the contest. Just 15 minutes into the game HC's
Reed connected with Evans on a free kick from 40 yards out to give
Hendrix a quick 1-0 lead. The Pirates retaliated quickly, scoring
less than four minutes later when sophomore Evan Perkins (pictured)
received a ball from senior Alex Keller, beat one defender and
placed it into the back of the net, tying the game.
Keller than scored a goal of his own in the 31st minute,
unassisted, giving SU a 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
Immediately following the break, Southwestern made their
presence known, scoring just 29 seconds into the period. Perkins
scored once again after receiving a pass from junior Colin McCulloch and chipped it over the charging keeper for the goal.
With a 3-1 lead in hand Hendrix closed the gap on a penalty kick
by Silvestri, pulling within one goal 3-2 with 40 minutes remaining
in the game. The Pirates worked hard and extended the lead back to
two just two minutes later when sophomore Forrest Baker's corner
kick lofted perfectly into the box and McCulloch headed it
home.
Southwestern was +11 (18-7) in shot differential and +7 (9-2) on
corner kicks. Goal keeper Nick Pierce recorded three saves in the
contest.
The Pirates return to non-conference action this coming weekend
as they face Rowan and Christopher Newport in neutral site matches
in San Antonio, TX. Game time is set for 5:00 pm on Friday and
Saturday.
