GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University Men's Soccer came inches away from scoring a last second goal to beat Trinity University, resulting in a scoreless draw in the SAA home opener. The Pirates historic unbeaten win streak comes to an end at seven straight games, which marks the second best run in school history. The result was still positive as they move to 8-1-1 overall and 0-0-1 in the conference.
Southwestern and Trinity met for the 41st time in program history in the final regular season meeting as SAA members before the Pirates move to the SCAC next year. Tuesday night opened conference play for both squads who were ranked one and two in the preseason poll. Despite, being ranked second in the national poll, Trinity entered the night 4-2-3 overall. However. they returned to form recently with a 7-0 victory against Concordia. Southwestern entered with seven straight wins and six straight clean sheets.
The lineup remained similar as
Connor Gritzmacher stayed in the lineup following
Amar Singh's injury. Both teams failed to register legitimate threats to start the game before
Chase Johnson and another Tiger received yellows for aggressive tackles. The first half only yielded three shots on goal combined between both teams as the defenses offered no space.
Grey Richards found a crease for an opportunity in the 59th, which went just wide. Possession flipped back and fourth as neither team could take advantage of corners and set pieces. The disciplined nature of both teams refused to surrender an easy goal in a match that may hold the fate of the SAA.
Southwestern dodged multiple late Trinity attacks before
Brady Faulkner had an opportunity for glory. The freshman used his speed to burst past the Tiger back line in an incredible run with only ten seconds remaining. The Tiger keeper caught a hair of the breakaway shot with only five seconds remaining as Varsity Field was ready to erupt.
