Southwestern's men's soccer team opened the 2008 season with two losses in the Southwestern / Trinity Tournament in Georgetown this weekend, falling to University of Texas-Tyler 2-0 on Friday and to University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 3-1 on Saturday.
Thunderclouds loomed over Southwestern's home field in Georgetown on Friday (Aug. 29) afternoon as the Pirates took on the University of Texas-Tyler Patriots in front of a crowd of nearly 200. After a scoreless first half, the Patriots were able to sneak a ball past senior goalkeeper Ryan Tasin before the game was delayed due to lightning. Despite accurate shooting, with 8 out of 11 shots on goal, Southwestern was unable to begin the year with a win and conceded one more goal before the game ended.
On Saturday (Aug. 30), the Pirates again took the field against the Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders. Down by an early Crusader goal by Jonathan Hernandez early in the game, the Pirates began an offensive surge halfway through the first period, pressuring the defense into giving up a corner kick that resulted in a goal by senior Josh Spencer.
Following the half, Mary Hardin-Baylor eventually pulled even and scored twice in the 65th and 70th minutes, sealing the season's second loss for the Pirates. Goalkeepers Tasin and Michael Ross shared the loss.
Men's soccer will again face off against the American Southwest Conference next weekend in the SCAC vs. ASC Conference Challenge in San Antonio, hosted by Trinity University on September 5th and 6th.
