Pirates Falter in Second Half of Loss at Trinity

The Southwestern University women's basketball team took a nine-point lead in to the half but got outscored by 24 in the second half, falling to Trinity University on Saturday (Jan. 13) in San Antonio, TX.

The game started off close with both teams tied at 14 each with 11:28 on the clock. SU then took control of the half after Amanda Gordon (Houston, TX/Bellaire HS) hit a layup less than 30 seconds later. After the score moved to 19-16 in favor the Pirates, SU went on a 9-0 run, capped by a Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) jumper at the 6:16 mark. Southwestern then went in to the half leading 31-22.

The second half was all Trinity as the Tigers outscored SU 19-10 in the first seven minutes to tie the game at 41-41. From that point on, Southwestern scored 18 while Trinity put up 33. The Tigers shot 56.7 percent in the second half and were 5-6 from behind the three-point arc after not making a single three-pointer in the first stanza.

Sophomore Jessica Stephenson (Duncanville, TX/Howard Payne University) and junior Kelli Hill (Plano, TX/Plano East HS) both made four three-pointers in the game and both finished with team-high 14 points. Stephenson went 5-11 from the floor while Hill was 5-8 in addition to recording five rebounds, an assist, one block and one steal.

Senior Kendal George (Winnie, TX/East Chambers HS) connected on 4-11 from the field and was 4-4 at the charity stripe for 12 points while also grabbing five rebounds. Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) led the Pirates with 10 rebounds and Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) pulled down seven boards.

The Pirates out-rebounded Trinity 39-37 but were undone by 30 turnovers, their second-highest total of the season. Southwestern shot 37.5 percent from the floor in the game while the Tigers shot at a 43.5 percent clip.

Southwestern's overall record falls to 8-6 on the season and 2-3 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Trinity, meanwhile, improves to 9-5 on the year, 3-2 in conference.

The Pirates play again on Sunday (Jan. 14) as they host future SCAC member Colorado College for a 6:00 p.m. game in Georgetown, TX.
