Southwestern Earns SAA Tournament Berth Despite Narrow Loss to Trinity

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University women's basketball closed out the regular season Saturday afternoon with a hard-fought 71–68 loss to Trinity University inside the Robertson Center. Despite the setback, the Pirates finish the regular season 13–12 overall and 4–10 in Southern Athletic Association play, securing the No. 6 seed in the upcoming SAA Conference Tournament.

Southwestern opened the contest with strong energy, outscoring Trinity 22–15 in the first quarter behind efficient shooting and aggressive play in the paint. The Pirates shot 44.4 percent from the field in both the first and second quarters, carrying a 38–31 advantage into halftime after the teams played even in the second frame, 16–16.

Trinity used a pivotal third quarter to shift momentum, outscoring Southwestern 24–10 while holding the Pirates to 4-of-18 shooting (22.2 percent) from the floor. Southwestern responded with a resilient fourth-quarter effort, knocking down five three-pointers and shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc in the final period, but the comeback bid fell just short in a game that featured seven ties and four lead changes.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Adrianna McCoy led the Pirates with 19 points on 9-of-20 shooting in 33 minutes of action, adding three rebounds and two assists.

  • Neela Castillo followed with 16 points, connecting on four three-pointers, while Trinity Benitez recorded a strong all-around performance with 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

  • Kylee Symons nearly posted a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds, and Emma Flores contributed four assists and four rebounds.

GAME NOTES

  • Layla Tovar and Lizzy Kellam each added four points off the bench, while Lauren Stevens chipped in two points and three rebounds.. 

  • As a team, Southwestern finished 27-of-71 (38.0 percent) from the field, 6-of-21 (28.6 percent) from three-point range, and 8-of-11 (72.7 percent) from the free-throw line.

  • The Pirates controlled second-chance opportunities with 20 points and outrebounded Trinity on the offensive glass, while adding 11 points off turnovers and 24 points in the paint.

  • The Pirates will pack their bags and travel to Mount Berry, Georgia as the No. 6 seed in the SAA Championships, where they will face No. 3 Millsaps College on Thursday, February 26 at 1:00 p.m.
