GEORGETOWN, TEXAS — The Southwestern University women's basketball program celebrated a standout season as four Pirates were recognized with Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Conference honors. Freshman guard Neela Castillo was named the SAA Rookie of the Year and earned Second Team All-SAA honors, while junior forward Trinity Benitez and junior guard Adrianna McCoy received All-SAA Honorable Mention. Freshman Kylee Symons rounded out the group by being selected to the SAA All-Sportsmanship Team.
Castillo capped off a phenomenal debut season with 347 points, averaging 13.9 points per game, alongside 66 assists, 63 steals, 12 blocks, and 126 rebounds. She also connected on 56 three-pointers at 33.7% shooting and delivered a record-breaking 39-point performance against Sewanee. Castillo recorded three double-doubles this season and has been a consistent playmaker, helping the Pirates secure a spot in the SAA Conference Tournament. Her scoring, defense, and leadership have established her as a cornerstone of the program for years to come.
Benitez contributed 302 points this season, averaging 12.1 points per game, and recorded five double-doubles, including a 24-point game high. McCoy was a force on the floor as well, surpassing 800 career points and scoring in double digits in 14 games this season, maintaining an 11.6 points-per-game average. Both juniors' consistent performances played a crucial role in the Pirates' success this season.
Freshman guard Kylee Symons earned recognition on the SAA All-Sportsmanship Team for her respect on and off the court. Symons has been an exciting spark for Southwestern, making key offensive and defensive plays that have energized the team and contributed to its SAA Conference Tournament berth.
With four players honored by the SAA, the Pirates demonstrated depth, talent, and teamwork this season, setting a strong foundation for continued success in the years ahead.
