Pirate Women Fall in Season Opener to Emory

The Emory Eagles spoiled Southwestern's season-opener on Friday (Nov. 17) night in Atlanta, GA by defeating the Pirates 72-62.

Emory opened up scoring just six seconds in to the game on a jumper from Mary Smith. Kendal George (Winnie, TX/East Chambers HS) tied things up just 18 seconds later in what was a back-and-forth first half.

In the half, there were 11 ties and eight lead changes. The Pirates took the lead at the 4:07 mark on a Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) layup. Southwestern maintained its lead through the half, leading by as many as five.

The game stayed close in the second half with SU leading for most of the first 12 minutes. The Pirates held their largest lead of the game at 9:49 when Jessica Stephenson (Duncanville, TX/Howard Payne University) connected on a three-pointer for a six point lead.

Emory took the lead for good with 6:17 left in the game on a Keenan Whitesides jumper. The Eagles outscored the Pirates 15-5 over the final 6:17 to pull away for the 10 point win.

George led all players in scoring with 21 on 8-16 shooting and she was 5-6 from the charity stripe. The senior also recorded a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) pitched in 12 points for SU. Senior Priyanka Kainthla (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) with five assists and Kelli Hill (Plano, TX/Plano East HS) recorded two blocks.

Emory shot almost 59 percent from the field, connecting on 30 of 51 shots attempted while SU managed to shoot just over 38 percent. The Pirates were out-rebounded 37 to 29 but managed to force 22 turnovers and record four blocks.

Southwestern plays again on Saturday (Nov. 18) against Meredith College at 2:00 p.m. in Atlanta, GA.
