Pirates Surge in Third Quarter to Defeat Howard Payne at Home, 60–45

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - A dominant third quarter and a balanced team effort propelled Southwestern University women's basketball to a 60–45 victory over Howard Payne on Tuesday night inside the Robertson Center. The win lifts the Pirates to 5–2 on the season.

Southwestern battled through a defensive first half, trailing 12–11 after the opening period and entering halftime down 24–23. The game shifted dramatically in the third, where the Pirates exploded for 27 points while holding the Yellow Jackets to just 10. SU's high-pressure defense and aggressive drives to the paint fueled the momentum swing, giving the Pirates a 50–34 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Southwestern maintained control the rest of the way, securing the 15-point win behind efficient free-throw shooting, strong rebounding, and a bench that contributed key minutes.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Southwestern's offense featured a balanced scoring attack led by Emma Flores, who paced the Pirates with 14 points while adding two rebounds and two steals and knocking down 6 of 8 free throws

  • Kylee Symons delivered one of the most impactful all-around performances of the night, finishing with 9 points, a team-high 9 rebounds, and 3 steals, while converting seven of her eight attempts from the foul line.

  • Neela Castillo added 6 points, three rebounds, and three steals, and Trinity Benitez chipped in 4 points to go along with five boards. 

GAME NOTES

  • Off the bench, Lauren Stevens provided a major lift with 6 points and 6 rebounds, while Cylee Lopez added 6 points on a pair of three-pointers. Alaa Almzayen (3 points) and Adley Halligan (2 points) also contributed valuable minutes, helping sustain the Pirates' energy and depth.

  • The Pirates finished the night shooting 16-for-54 (29.6%) overall, 6-for-22 (27.3%) from beyond the arc, and an impressive 22-for-29 (75.9%) at the free-throw line.

  • Southwestern's ability to capitalize on offensive rebounds played a key role in the win, as the Pirates generated 20 second-chance points to keep pressure on the Yellow Jackets.
