WLAX Drops Nail-Bitter At Puget Sound, 11-9

TACOMA, WASHINGTON - Southwestern University Women's Lacrosse rallied back after trailed by five goals, ultimately falling at University of Puget Sound on Sunday afternoon, 11-9. The Pirates concluded their road trip in the northwest with a split against Pacific Lutheran University and Puget Sound. 

Southwestern fell behind 7-2 at halftime before rallying back to trail 10-9 with one minute left. The Loggers tacked on the insurance goal to beat the Pirates, but the Pirates fight was pivotal. 

Senior Elaina Seeley led the squad with four goals, marking a career-high. The senior continues to improve in her second season playing the game with five goals on the year. Junior Sydney Martin was a force in crunch time once again with three goals on the night and two in the final three minutes.

  • Southwestern took on the Loggers for the sixth time in program history as the all-time record is now 3-3. 
  • Seeley scored the opening goal immediately on the assist from freshman Nia Trevillion
  • However, PGS dug in defensively holding the Pirates scoreless in the next 23 minutes.

  • Puget Sound extented the lead to 6-1 with six unanswered. T
  • Trevillion scored to stop the Logger run, before PGS scored again as Southwestern extended the half down by five.

  • The Southwestern offense came alive in the third as Martin and Seeley executed on free position goals. 
  • Senior Susette Mireles scored her first goal of the season, followed by another from Seeley as the Pirates had all the momentum with four unanswered. 
  • The Loggers scored before half on the man-up advantage.

  • The Pirates faced a 7-9 deficit with only five minutes to go. 
  • Martin stepped up again after scoring four fourth period goals last game. 
  • The senior found the net twice to pull within one under a minute. 
  • The Loggers iced the game for a goal with 21 seconds left, but the Pirates fought to the end. 
UP NEXT 
The Pirates head home to prepare for seven straight games at home, starting with Wentworth Institute of Technology on March 3 at 6:00 p.m.
