GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern University Women's Soccer garnered the well-deserved sweep of this week's SAA Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week. Junior
Jackie Powell snatched the first SAA Offensive honor for a dominant week that included five goals and two game-winners. Freshman
EJ Searfoss played her best between the pipes this week, earning the Defensive honor.
Powell finally gets recognized after being snubbed a few times in prior weeks. The junior started the week scoring two highlight reel goals that included the game-winner at Howard Payne University on Tuesday. Powell scored an additional two goals against Millsaps College on Friday night, both coming the first seven minutes.
The fifth goal could go down as one of Powell's favorite among numerous unbelievable career goals. Southwestern took down the 21st ranked team in the country on a game-winner in the 78th minute from a weak foot screamer off the crossbar and in from 30 yards out to seal the match. Powell's five goals helped the Pirates go from struggling to make the SAA tournament, into prime position to advance following two big conference wins. Powell scored her 12th goal of the season on Sunday, marking the most in a season since 1994 among Pirates.
Searfoss was dominant in goal all week, highlighted by one of the best individual performances a keeper could possibly have on Sunday. The freshman played aggressive all week, allowing only one goal in three games. Searfoss had five saves in the victory over Howard Payne on Tuesday, following it up with zero goals allowed in Friday's conference victory over Millsaps.
However, the performance in the victory over Rhodes College was picture perfect. Searfoss had a career-high 16 saves, winning every air ball and snatching shots out of the top corners. The Lynx continued to threat in the second half as Searfoss made a diving penalty kick save that fired up the entire squad. She also assisted on the lone goal of the match, booting a drop kick to Powell who scored. Finally, Searfoss concluded the match snatching a shot that was heading for the top corner, securing the shutout.
