Men's Lacrosse Beats Rhodes, First Time Since 2014

Box Score

The Southwestern Pirates traveled to Memphis, Tennessee to play an atypical Monday afternoon game against the Lynx. The Pirates' came in on a four game win streak hoping to take advantage of a deeply battered Lynx team, having lost five straight games.

The Pirates' and the Lynx have a history of playing very tight matchups and this one was no different. The Pirates' shut out the Lynx in the first quarter with the Lynx playing tough defense as well. Tommy Dyson was able to score a backhanded goal, beating his defender from X, to lead off the scoring for the Pirates'. Nick Doxey also scored with 22 seconds left in the quarter to make it 2-0.

A Lynx goal tied the game 2-2 at the 10 minute mark in the second quarter and it would take near the end of the quarter before any team scored. But three goals in two minutes by Cade McDonald, Dyson and Tyler Johnson gave the Pirates' the 5-3 halftime lead.

The third period ended with the Pirates' losing the lead for the first time in the game and going down 6-7 to the Lynx. Cody Foster then tied the game at 7-7 going into the final quarter. Foster, determined to beat Rhodes for the first time in his career, put up three goals in the fourth quarter alone. With the help of two more goals from Matthew Sganga and Doxey the Pirates' secured a 12-9 win.

A combination of the Pirates' tenacious defense, Hudson Bearden's dominance at the face-off X and attention to detail allowed Southwestern to maintain a lead the entirety of the fourth quarter. Bearden went 76 percent at the X which didn't allow the Lynx to gain any traction and goaltender Nate Blair had a 62 percent save percentage, making it nearly impossible for them to score.

Overall, it was a team effort to secure possessions, the Pirates' had an outrageous 43 ground balls and cleared the ball at 83 percent as well. All in all, the Pirates' had the recipe to put another W in the win column, ousting the Lynx in all statistical categories.

The Pirates' will have five days to recover before going on spring break and taking on Marymount (Va.), Saturday March 12th at 11:00 AM EST.
