MLAX Collects Seven All-SAA Nods In Houtz, Pena, Cox, Stillwell, Steffek, Avicolli, & Trailer

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Southwestern Men's Lacrosse snatched seven spots on the 2026 All-SAA awards, showing their depth with multiple different classes represented. The Pirates who recieved honors included 

- First Team: Senior Matthew Houtz (Midfield)
- First Team: Junior Trey Pena (Face Off)
- Second Team: Sophomore Keaten Cox (Attack)
- Second Team: Sophomore Sam Stillwell (Defense)
- Honorable Mention: Senior Chris Steffek (Defense)
- Honorable Mention: Sophomore Dante Avicolli (Goalie)
- Sportsmanship Team: Sophomore Jake Trailer (LSM)

Houtz was one of three midfielder in the league to earn First Team honors who has arguable the best shot in the league. The Georgetown native completes an incredible feat of reaching First Team after being named Second Team last year in a talented conference. Houtz had a career year with 30 goals, 10 assists, and 31 ground balls which were all career-highs. His highlight of the season was an incredible seven-goal performance against The College of Wooster. Houtz surpassed 100 career points this season and has 90 goals currently. 

Pena was also named First Team after dominating the Face Off line as arguably the Pirates most valuable asset, consistently giving the Pirates more possessions than their opponents. Pena won 183 of 285 Face offs this regular season at a 64% clip. The junior collected 106 ground balls to lead the conference. He has 217 on his career which also ranks second all-time in program history, chasing the record at 292. 

Cox has had a monster start to his career with another big season at 26 goals and 25 points. The sophomore has 48 goals and 37 assists on pace for a historic Pirate career as a target who can take over any game. He was the lone Pirates to win not one but two SAA Player of the Week honors with eight multi-goal games, finishing the season with nine goals and ten assists in the final three games. The highlight of Showtime's season was his game-winner with two seconds remaining against University of Dubuque. 

Stillwell emerged as an elite defender, consistently causing turnovers and switching possessions on defense. Stillwell ranked first the SAA with 29 caused turnovers at 1.93 per game. The sophomore stepped up in the biggest moment with five on Saturday in a elimination game against Berry, which marked a career-high. Stillwell also racked up 47 ground balls on the season. 

Steffek is the heart and soul of the Pirates as team captain, commanding the room. Steffek and Stillwell have made a defensive duo which is tough as nails as the senior finished the regular season with 19 caused turnovers and 29 ground balls. The captain also can advance up field in transition with one goal and three assists. The defensemen has 61 caused turnovers and 99 career ground balls. 

Avicolli returns to the All-SAA list for a second straight year on the Honorable Mention slot. Avicolli is a gifted athlete and pivotal leader between the pipes as only as sophomore. The California native finished the regular season with 157 saves, 52 ground balls, and .541 save percentage. His saves ranks fifth all-time for a single-season and currently third in save percentage for a season. The highlight of the season was his 22 save performance in an upset over Illinois Wesleyan. 

Trailer earns All-Sportsmanship as a fantastic teammate and hard-worker. The sophomore had 19 caused turnovers and 35 ground balls in a breakout season with five goals and three assists. The Pirates look to keep the momentum high in a semifinal matchup with Sewanee on Thursday at 3 p.m. CT.
