Men's Lacrosse Tops Chatham in 20-12 Win

GEORGETOWN, Texas –  Southwestern men's lacrosse put an end to the Chatham Cougars four-game winning streak by taking a 20-12 victory this Wednesday evening.
 
Jared Welsh was the leading scorer for the Pirates with a total of four goals and one assist. Zac Asbury followed Welsh with three goals for the Pirates and had five assists out of the 12  combined assists for the team. Asbury"s assist was vital in the third period for the Pirates to help keep the lead. 
 
In the first period, Chatham's offense was able to keep up with the Pirates making the end of the first period 5-4, with the Cougars winning eight of the ten faceoffs. 
 
Everett Barger, who sank the first goal of the game, was crucial in the Pirates offense in the second period. By scoring two goals to answer back, Chatham tied the game 6-6. Then Cody Foster, Logan Spalding and Asbury scored three goals to give the Pirates their first significant lead in the game. With one final assist from Barger to Welsh, the Pirates went into the half with an 11-7 lead. 
 
In the third period, Asbury lined up three assists out of the four goals made by the Pirates. Even with Chatham dominating the Pirates in faceoffs, winning seven of the eight in the third, Southwestern's men's lacrosse kept the Cougars to three goals and the Pirates were ahead by five points going into the fourth.  
 
During the final period, the Cougars scored two goals to try and make their way back into the game. But Southwestern used the seven turnovers and seven gained ground balls to allow Kai Knight-Turcan, Spalding and Welsh to combine for five more goals that took them to a 20-12 victory. 
 
For the Pirates defense, goalkeeper Kyle Kuberski had a season-high of 17 saves out of 29 shots on goal. Bailey Middleton, Tyler Santos, Blake Sterger and Jack Doloszycki all contributed three groundballs combining for 12 out of 23 groundballs for the Pirates. 
 
The Pirates now improve to 3-2 in the season and get ready for their next home game as they take on Cornell College next Monday, March 11, at 7:00 p.m. on Varsity Fields.
