Big First Quarter Propels Pirates to Victory

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Southwestern University Pirates men's lacrosse team used a big first quarter to defeat Pfeiffer 21-9 on the first game of a three-game road trip.

Southwestern scored nine goals to one in the opening quarter, getting four from Kai Knight-Turcan, who finished with a season high six. The Pirates scored the first four goals of the game, with Zac Asbury assisting on two, before Pfeiffer responded with an unassisted John Allen goal.

The Pirates scored four more in the second quarter with two from Knight-Turcan to take a 13-4 lead at halftime.

Southwestern dominated the third quarter, scoring five of the six goals, all unassisted with a different player scoring each goal.

Pfeiffer scored the first four goals of the fourth quarter, bringing the score to 18-9 but the Pirates' Nick Doxey scored back-to-back goals and Thomas Volpe finished with an unassisted goal with 21-9.

Asbury led the Pirates with seven total points, scoring three goals and assisting on four others. Knight-Turcan had his six goals on six shots. Goalie Kyle Kuberski had 14 saves on 23 shots.

Southwestern won the turnover battle with 16 to Pfeiffer's 20 and took 20 of the 35 face-offs for a 44-33 shots advantage. With the win, the Pirates improve to 5-3 on the season. Southwestern will play William Peace on Sunday, March 17 at 1:00 p.m.
