Jared Welsh Ties Career-High to Lead Pirates Past Hendrix

Box Score

CONWAY, Ark. — Senior Jared Welsh scored four goals and assisted on three others to match a career-high in points to lead the Southwestern University Pirates men's lacrosse team to a 16-7 win over the Hendrix Warriors.

Both defenses held strong through most of the first quarter until an unassisted goal by Hendrix's Elias Ramos put the Warriors on the board with 3:48 remaining in the quarter. The Pirates won the ensuing face-off and responded with an unassisted goal from Jack Doloszycki to tie the game at 1-1.

The Pirates' offense got rolling in the second, getting an early extra-man opportunity on a Hendrix penalty for tripping, with Logan Spalding scoring an unassisted goal.

Southwestern University's Zane Abbott won the face-off and the Pirates got another quick goal from Jared Welsh

A Pirate turnover led to the Warriors' second goal of the afternoon when Domini Dahille found Achilles Armendariz to bring Hendrix back to within 3-2.

The Southwestern defense held over the next few minutes after ceding an extra-man opportunity, then struck when Spalding scored again on an assist from Kai Knight-Turcan

Hendrix then won the next face-off but Abbott forced a turnover and Zac Asbury found Spalding for his third goal of the game. Asbury then assisted on a Knight-Turcan goal to give Southwestern a 6-2 lead. The Warriors responded with an unassisted goal to pull to within 6-3 at the half.

The Pirates and Warriors alternated goals in the third with Southwestern extending its lead to 9-5 with Welsh responsible for all three goals, scoring one unassisted and then assisting on two Benjamin Libby goals.

Welsh and Asbury combined for four consecutive goals to open the fourth. Asbury scored with a man up on an assisted from Welsh, Welsh scored back-to-back unassisted goals, then Asbury tacked on another unassisted goal. Knight-Turcan added an unassisted goal and Jacob Hamilton scored on an assist from Matt Minnick. The Pirates closed the game with another Knight-Turcan goal from Spalding.

Southwestern surrendered two goals in the fourth, with one coming a man down.

Goalie Kyle Kuberski allowed seven goals, saving 10 on 17 shot attempts. The Pirates won the turnover battle 23-17 and outshot the Warriors 49-27.

With the win, the Pirates improve to 2-1 on the season, dropping Hendrix to 2-1. Southwestern will return home for a match against Trine University on March 4 at 7 p.m.
