Box Score GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern's unselfish play paid off in spades as the Pirates defeated Centenary College on Friday evening 6-0. Evan Perkins paced the scoring with a first half hat trick.
After an early yellow card the Pirates had their first solid look of the game. Southwestern took advantage of the free kick and wind as the ball sailed into the box. Tim Eamma's header was off the mark but Evan Perkins nearly put in the ball. Sharp reflexes by Centenary's Robbie Ramirez kept the shot out of the goal and the game scoreless.
All the hard work paid off for the Pirates as Steven Resnik out-muscled Centenary's Cullen Gallet for the ball deep in Gent territory. Resnik's cross found Zack Faulkner who touched to a wide open Evan Perkins. Perkins needed to just misdirect the pass into the back of the net to give Southwestern a 1-0 lead.
Just 30 seconds later the Pirates made it two as Perkins and Resnik teamed up once again. Resnik's pass was perfectly placed at the feet of Perkins just yards from the goal. Perkins, once again, needed to just tap the ball into the net and gave SU a 2-0 lead.
With the Southwestern defense easily handling the Gents, the offense had the latitude to attack aggressively and continued to do so. Matthew Nickell brought the ball up from the backfield and came all the way down the near sideline with ease. He then found Perkins streaking toward goal and placed the ball for an easy goal, handing Southwestern a 3-0 lead and Perkins a first-half hat trick.
With fresh legs on the field to start the second half the Pirates wasted no time added some insurance as Evan Javors passed to Alec Vaughn who found Ryan Jones for a 4-0 SU lead.
Centenary turned up their offensive attack and got a breakaway with 28 minutes to play on the clock. Spencer Nickerson broke through the defense and sped toward the goal, drawing Daniel Poole off the line as the last defender. Poole slid to make a play on the ball and got Nickerson in the process, giving the Gents a penalty kick.
Adam Ghaemmaghami stepped to the line to take the kick and sent the ball off the left post and out of harm's way, keeping the count 4-0 in favor of the Pirates.
Despite holding a large lead the Pirates continued to press on and added another goal. Timothy Eamma, assisted by Marco Alcocer, pushed Southwestern's lead to five as the clock ticked under ten minutes. Alcocer added a goal of his own, assisted by Perkins, with under seven to play adding to the Pirates comfortable lead.
Southwestern closed out the game and secured the 6-0 win while taking 19 shots and holding Centenary to seven. Poole recorded one save in goal while Ramirez and Chase Duet combined for five saves.
The Pirates, now 9-6 overall and 3-3 in the SCAC, remain at home to face Austin College on Sunday afternoon. Game time is set for noon.
