Offensive Dominance Key to Win

Box Score

The Pirate lacrosse team dominated their game Sunday afternoon against Oglethorpe University, using a steady stream of goals to win 23-3. Southwestern was led by Jamie Long (pictured) who scored an SU record six goals and tacked on five assists to lead the Pirates.

It was obvious early that SU was had command of the game, controlling the tempo from the outset. Southwestern scored in the first 1:30 of the game when Jamie Long found Edward Williams open in front of the goal. Long scored an unassisted goal four and a half minutes later to put SU up 2-0. Oglethorpe refused to roll over and scored back to back goals to pull even 2-2 with 2:38 to play. Long took matters into his own hands, scoring the go ahead just seconds later. At the end of the first quarter the Pirates had a comfortable 5-2 lead.

Four goals in the second gave the Pirates some breathing room as they led 9-3 heading into the break.

Southwestern regained control after halftime and hit the accelerator, scoring nine third quarter goals and five in the fourth to secure the win.

Gus Brunger added four goals and two assists in the win while Carter Cowan and Tyler Downing added three goals each. The Pirates scored more goals than shots taken by the Stormy Petrels and led in every offensive category.

The win moves Southwestern to 6-8 on the year and 3-3 in the SCAC. They are just a half game behind Hendrix for the final spot in the first ever SCAC Conference Tournament. Hendrix faces league-leading Colorado before coming to Georgetown for the final game of the season on Sunday, April 17th, undoubtedly a match-up for the last postseason spot.
