GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern needed a couple of solid
defensive stops and just one shot in sudden-death overtime to earn
their first victory of the season 9-8 over Hendrix College. It was
the SCAC opener for both schools with each team searching for their
first win of the season. Thomas Mock's third goal of the game
lifted the Pirates to the win.
Hendrix and Southwestern played a well balanced contest
throughout the entirety of the game. Each team scored one goal in
the first quarter and two in the second to head into the break tied
3-3.
The Pirates came out strong after halftime, scoring three goals
to Hendrix's one, and took a 6-4 lead going into the fourth
quarter. Hendrix would not go away, however, as they mounted a come
back that culminated in a goal by Tim Wojcik to tie the game once
again, 8-8. Connor Hanrahan's shot in the final second was saved by
HC's goalie Keith Clemens, forcing the overtime
The Warriors won the opening faceoff in overtime and after
advancing the ball deep into Pirate territory took a time out to
set up their play. Just about one minute into the period HC's Alex
Wilkinson got free and took a shot that was saved by Donnie Murray,
his 21st save of the period.
Possession changed back and forth until Southwestern secured the
ball and had a successful clear to the attacking half of the field.
Head Coach Joe Ernst took a timeout and set up the game winning
plan. Just ten seconds later Mock found himself in front of the
goal and took a perfectly placed left handed shot that screamed
past HC's Clemens and into the goal to give Southwestern the win.
Hendrix won in the shot count 44-38, but SU had 12 more
groundballs in the contest, 52-40.
Three Pirates equally split nine goals during the game as Mock,
Jamie Long and Edward Willaims all had three goals each. Hendrix's
Wojcik and Clayton Cersonsky had two goals each to lead the
Warriors.
With the win Southwestern improves to 1-8 on the season and
begins SCAC action at 1-0. Hendrix continues to search for their
first win and fall to 0-8 on the year and 0-1 in the conference.
The Pirates will hit the road and look to continue their strong
play in the SCAC with a trip to Colorado College on April 3rd.
