GEORGETOWN, Texas - After a shaky start to conference action the
Southwestern softball team regrouped and put their bats to work as
they took the final three games of the series with Austin College
on Sunday afternoon.
At the outset of day two the Pirates and 'Roos had some
unfinished business to attend to. With game two from the previous
day still tied after six innings the two teams took to the field to
settle the tie.
AC scored one run in the top of the inning to put the pressure
on the Pirates. SU's response was immediate as Blair Wallace
had a lead off single and Katelyn Gola followed with a bunt single
to represent the winning run. After a line out by Haley Hughes put
one out up Kaitlyn Pavlicek's grounder to short was
misplayed, overthrowing first base, allowing Wallace to tie it up
again and moving Gola to third base. Gola was brought home on a
single by Bre Lewis to win the game.
The momentum and scoring carried over into the next game as the
Pirates put up three runs in the first inning, snagging an early
lead and never looking back. They scored two more in the fourth to
go up by five, 5-0 and held Austin College to just one run in the
seventh inning to win the third game of the series 5-1.
True to form for the day SU wasted no time in the final game,
scoring five runs in the first and three runs in the second taking
an 8-1 lead heading into the third inning. AC fought back and
posted five runs of their own in the fourth to pull within 8-7 but
the SU defense shut them down the rest of the way as the offense
tacked on three more runs to secure the 11-7 win.
Hughes led offensively going 5-7 with two doubles and one
triple, scoring three times and driving in three runs in the final
two games. Aly Pulver went 4-6 and Wallace was 3-5.
Kara Solomon and Lyndsy Maus each earned wins on the mound while
Solomon also received a save.
Southwestern improves to 15-6 overall and 3-1 in the SCAC while
the 'Roos fall to 10-10 on the year and 1-3 in the SCAC.
The Pirates continue SCAC action over the coming weekend as they
head to Millsaps for a four game series starting on Saturday.
