SEGUIN, Texas – The Southwestern Pirates were sharp on the
road as the defeated the Bulldogs 4-1 and 20-3 in non-conference
action on Sunday afternoon. The win's improve SU to 4-0 while Texas
Lutheran drops to 1-3 overall.
In game one, Southwestern scored in the top of the first on an
RBI single by first-year Haley Hughes to score lead off hitter
Blair Wallace who reached on a walk.
Texas Lutheran tied it up with a run in the bottom of the fifth,
but pinch hitter Aly Pulver broke it open in the top of the seventh
with a two-run double. Senior Katelyn Gola delivered a perfect
sacrifice bunt to bring in sophomore Amanda Ambrose for the third
run of the inning.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Pavlicek sat down the Bulldogs in order in the
bottom of the seventh to secure the 4-1 win.
Game two started off in a different fashion with TLU scoring two
in the bottom of the first and one in the bottom of the second to
lead 3-0 after two. SU jumped into action in the top of the third
and pushed three across the plate and contined to pile on the runs
scoring one in the fourth, five in the sixth and an unprecedented
10 in the seventh.
Every Pirate 1-9 in the batting order scored in the seventh with
Hughes scoring twice before the Bulldogs were able to secure even
one out. After the dust had settled SU lead by 17, 20-3 and
closed out the game by allowing one base runner in the bottom of
the seventh.
Pulver was perfect at the plate on Sunday going 2-2 with one
double and three RBI's. Hughes also had a big day going 5-9 with
three RBI's and scoring four times.
Southwestern set five records in game two including hits (Hayley
Hughes-4), at-bats (Kaitlyn Pavlicek-6), runs (Taylor Blair/Haley
Hughes-4), most points by two teams (23) and widest margin of
victory (17).
The Pirates return home for four games this weekend hosting
Hardin-Simmons on Friday and ASC power Mary Hardin-Baylor on
Saturday. The double-headers are set to begin at 1:00 each day.
