SHERMAN, Texas - The Southwestern Pirates handed the Austin College softball team its first two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference losses of the season on Saturday, topping the 'Roos 4-2 in game one of their doubleheader and 7-5 in game two.
In game one the Pirates jumped out to a 1-0 lead early when Katelyn Gola scored on an RBI single by Katelyn Pavlicek in the top of the first. Another run came home in the second inning when Bre Lewis doubled home Kenna Dies. The Pirates added one more run in the top of the fourth to make it 3-0.
Austin College fought back in the bottom of the sixth when Carolyn Stone drove in Suzanne Beltran and Stefanie Faith came home from third on an infield error. That was as close as the 'Roos would get though as the Pirates added one more insurance run in the seventh to make it a 4-2 final.
Southwestern jumped ahead early again in game two, with Quincy Meeker doubling to lead off the game and coming around to score one batter later to quickly make it 1-0. That remained the score until the top of the fifth when Blair Wallace doubled home a run and Lewis scored on a ground out by Meeker to make it a 3-0 game.
Austin College fought back with a big sixth inning, scoring five runs to take a 5-3 lead heading into the final frame. Beltran singled home Bobbi Schulle to get things started and Faith and Stone each singled in runs of their own. Courtney Neal finished off the inning with a base hit that brought home two runs and gave the 'Roos a two run edge.
The lead would not last long however as the Pirates took advantage of three Austin College errors in the top of the seventh to plate four runs and the 'Roos were unable to get anything going in the bottom half of the inning in the 7-5 loss.
Pavlicek earned the win for Southwestern in both games, with Lyndsy Maus starting game two and throwing solid innings early on.
Southwestern will look to complete the sweep of Austin College in another doubleheader with the first game set for 12:00 p.m. Sunday.
