TURNOVERS COST PIRATES WIN IN FINAL GAME OF SEASON

Feb. 22, 2009

Box Score

Southwestern University led most of the game against Colorado College, but two turnovers late in the contest cost the Pirates the victory in their final game of the 2008-2009 season.

The Pirates led the entire second half until a pair of free-throws by Colorado's Melanie Auguste gave the Tigers the lead, 57-56, with three minutes to play. Southwestern tied the game again on the following play on a free-throw by junior guard Narisa Trammell and then went up by one on a jumper by sophomore forward Staley Mullins. Auguste made a jumper of her own to regain the lead for Colorado and after an SU turnover, the Pirates were forced to foul and Colorado took advantage, draining both free throws. Southwestern got a good look at their end of the floor, but couldn't connect.

Sophomore guard Jennifer Tindle led the way for Southwestern, scoring 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field and 4-6 from the charity stripe. Senior forward Natasha Azizi chipped in 12 points in her final game as a Pirate. She also led the team with seven rebounds and a season high six assists.

Mullins had five blocks in the game to move her season total to 71. This places her tied for seventh with Trinity's Krista Prato Matthews (2007-2008) in the SCAC women's single season basketball records book.

The Pirates end the season 6-19 overall and 2-13 in conference action.
