Feb. 20, 2009

Box Score

Southwestern University went on the road on Friday and split its double-header with Hardin-Simmons, losing the first game 6-5 and winning 6-4 in the nightcap.

In the first game, the Pirates led 5-2 going into the bottom of the seventh and Hardin-Simmons rallied and scored 4 runs to steal the victory.

Southwestern scored first on a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning by Kaitlyn Pavlicek and then pushed two more across in the fifth on a Blair Wallace RBI single and a Kat Hoover RBI double to make it 3-0.

HSU scored two runs in the fifth as Beasley had an RBI double then came around to score when the relay throw went into the HSU dugout to cut the deficit to 3-2. Southwestern added two runs in the sixth on a Wallace RBI and Katelyn Gola RBI double.

Southwestern was just one out shy of securing the win after HSU's pinch-runner Tana Thomas was picked off at second base. This gave the Cowgirls one runner on with two outs. A pair of crucial walks mixed with solid hits set the stage for Taylor Named who dropped a shot over third base to drive in the winning run.

Kaitlyn Pavlicek was the losing pitcher for the Pirates while Chelsea Steelman earned the victory for Hardin-Simmons.

In game two, the Pirates posted two runs in the first inning to set the tone for the game. Katelyn Gola opened the game with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Bre Lewis. Wallace followed with a shot to right field and Gola scored after an error by HSU's center fielder. Pavlicek drove in Wallace on an RBI single to center field.

Hardin-Simmons posted one run in the bottom of the second, but Southwestern responded with a two-run top of the third. The Cowgirls attempted to take the lead by putting together another rally in the bottom of the third, but SU held them to 3 runs and kept the score even at four.

That was the last run Southwestern allowed and the Pirates score in the fourth and seventh innings to seal the victory.

Pavlicek earned the win with four and one-third innings of one-hit scoreless relief. HSU's Rawlings was the losing pitcher.

Offensively, the Pirates were led by Blair Wallace who was 4-7 with 2 RBI's and 2 runs on the afternoon. Kat Hoover also had a strong day going 3-7 with 4 RBI's, including 3 in game 2.

The win improves Southwestern to 3-1 on the year. They head up I-35 on Saturday to Belton to take on UMHB in a double-header starting at 1:00 p.m.
