Box Score

Junior Wes Willis (Austin, TX/Austin HS) improved to 8-1 and the Pirates moved over .500 on the year as the SU baseball team run-ruled Hendrix College 14-4 in seven innings in a SCAC tilt in Georgetown, TX on Friday (Apr. 11).

Southwestern jumped ahead in the first inning as Todd Boone (Huntsville, TX/Huntsville HS) led off with a walk followed by a bunt single from Richard Falcone (Houston, TX/Westside HS). With one out, Blake Williams (Lufkin, TX/Lufkin HS) drove in a run with a double and Jamie Herrmann (Houston, TX/Westside HS) picked up an RBI after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. SU also got a pair of runs on a failed pickoff attempt and a wild pitch. Matt Clark (Spring, TX/Klein HS) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to left and the Pirates final run of the inning came on a Hendrix error.

The Warrior offense came alive in the third inning with four runs on five hits. In the Pirates half of the inning, Boone drove in two runs with a single up the middle. Michael Murphy (Houston, TX/Austin HS) added a sacrifice fly in the inning while Herrmann drove in one more run on a walk. The Bucs got an RBI single from Falcone in the fourth and then got two more runs in the fifth on three hits.

Falcone, Williams and Mark Noggle (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) all had two hits for Southwestern. Noggle scored twice and drove in two runs with two doubles. Williams recorded one RBI and two runs scored while Falcone had one run batted in.

Boone was 1-4 but he scored twice and drove in a pair. Sophomore John Wooten (Columbus, TX/Columbus HS) went 0-0, drawing two walks and getting hit by two pitches. Wooten also scored three runs. Herrmann was 0-2 but he drove in three runs and scored once.

Willis went all seven innings for Southwestern, allowing four earned runs on seven hits. The junior struck out six and walked two while running his record in four SCAC games to 4-0.

SU improves to 18-17 with the win and the Pirates are now 8-5 in conference play. Hendrix falls to 13-24 and 2-11.

Southwestern and Hendrix play again on Saturday (Apr. 12) as the Pirates and Warriors play a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 pm in Georgetown.
