MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE - Southwestern University Baseball carried a lead through seven innings against a 21st nationally ranked Rhodes College squad, ultimately surrendering six runs in the eighth in their first SAA series game on Friday afternoon, 6-3. The Pirates fall to 1-6 in conference play.
Freshman
Zane Heiliger was the star of the show, tossing seven innings with only two earned runs and four hits allowed. The freshman had a breakout performance as his longest prior outing lasting three innings as Heiliger last threw against Wooster on March 17th.
Head Coach
J.C. Bunch gave the ball to Heiliger in game one of the series against the current top ranked team in the SAA with a doublheader following on Friday. The Katy, Texas native kept the Lynx scoreless for the first seven innings, inducing soft contact against a powerful offense. Junior
Cale Cochran had a big day with an RBI double that gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Sophomore
Brandon Lang smashed a single extend the lead to 3-0 after six innings.
Heiliger retired the Lynx in order in the seventh before running out of gas in the eighth surrendering a solo homerun and a walk. It took four different Pirate relievers to retire the final three outs in the eighth as the Lynx took a 6-3 lead. Heiliger took the hook for two earned runs as freshman
Cam Fucik received the loss.
GAME NOTES
- Heiliger retired 21 batters in the outing with ten flyouts, ten ground outs, and one strikeout.
- Southwestern will likely turn to sophomore Darion Rogers and freshman Ben Roska tomorrow in the doubleheader.
- Sophomore Chase Adams and Cochran both finished with multi-hit performances.
