Pirates Fall Short in SCAC Opener against Colorado College

On Friday (Nov. 30) evening in Georgetown, TX, the Southwestern University women's basketball team came out on the losing end of a back and forth contest with Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Colorado College by a 64-59 margin.

The game saw 10 different lead changes with five of them coming in the first five minutes of the game. The score remained close throughout the first half with the Pirates' largest lead of the half coming when senior Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) hit a jumper in the paint for a 22-17 lead. The Tigers came back and built their lead to four with just 45 seconds left in the half. SU cut the lead to one and went in to the half trailing 31-30.

In the second period, Southwestern scored the first seven points, thanks to a pair of threes from Hoch, to take a six point lead. Colorado answered right back with a 9-0 run to make it 40-37. The Pirats trailed the rest of the way but made it interesting, pulling within three on a Narisa Trammel (Godley, TX/Godley HS) three-pointer with 53 seconds on the clock. Senior Kelli Hill (Plano, TX/Plano East HS) then missed on a three-point attempt with 12 seconds left before CC iced the game with a pair of free throws.

Junior Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) had a good night offensively for SU, totaling 22 points on 9-13 shooting from the floor. She was also 4-5 from the free throw line, had three rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal. Hoch ended the night 6-9 from the field, 4-7 from three-point range, for 16 points. Hoch also had four rebounds and three assists.

Senior Amanda Gordon (Houston, TX/Bellaire HS) had a team-high seven rebounds. As a team, the Pirates were out-rebounded 42-35. SU forced the Tigers into 15 turnovers and recorded seven blocks as a team.

Southwestern shot 37.7 percent (23-61) from the field while Colorado hit 40.4 percent (23-57) of its shots. Poor three-point shooting hurt the Pirates as they made just 7-31 (22.6 percent) attempts.

The loss moves Southwestern's record to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference. Colorado College picked up its first-ever win as a member of the SCAC and improved to 3-2 on the year.

The Pirates will bounce back and host Austin College on Saturday (Dec. 1) in Georgetown at 6:00 pm.
