Southwestern Bounces Back by Pounding Future SCAC Member

The SU women's basketball team dominated future Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference member Colorado College, 69-40, on Sunday (Jan. 14) evening in Georgetown, TX.

The Pirates took an early lead, scoring the first six points, before Colorado went on a 9-0 run. The three-point lead was the largest the Tigers would have all game as SU 12 unanswered points, capped by a Jessica Hoch (Garden City, TX/Garden City HS) jumper, to go ahead 18-9. Southwestern's largest lead of the half was 13 after a Jessica Stephenson (Duncanville, TX/Howard Payne University) three-pointer with 2:24 on the clock. The Pirates took a 12-point lead in to the half.

The Pirates outscored the Tigers 15-3 in the 5:35 of the second half to build the lead to 46-22. SU led by at least 20 the rest of the way and held its largest lead of the night when Jessica Hua (Austin, TX/Westwood HS) nailed a three with 31 seconds left to go up by 31.

Senior Kendal George (Winnie, TX/East Chambers HS) made a season-high 11 field goals in the game on 18 attempts for a game-high 24 points. She also led the team with seven rebounds and added two assists, two steals and one block. Fellow senior Margaret Connelly (Houston, TX/Bellaire HS) scored a season-high nine points on 3-4 shooting. She was also 3-5 from the charity stripe and had a season-high five rebounds.

Hua was a perfect 3-3 from the field, including 1-1 from three-point range, for a season-high seven points. Senior Sarah Warren (Argyle, TX/Argyle HS) was 2-2 from behind the arc and totaled six points for the Pirates while sophomore Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) pitched in with six rebounds and seven points.

Southwestern shot 49.1 percent (27-55) in the game compared to the Tigers who connected on just 24.2 percent (15-62) of their shots. CC did out-rebound the Pirates, 42-38, but committed 30 turnovers.

SU improves to 9-6 on the season and is 2-3 in conference play. Colorado College is 6-8 overall playing as an independent school. The Tigers become full members of the SCAC during the 2006-07 academic year.

The Pirates return to conference play on Friday (Jan. 19) when they head to Danville, KY to face the Centre Colonels at 6:00 p.m.
