The Southwestern University women's basketball team fell to 6-3 on the year with a 60-56 defeat at the hands of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders on Tuesday (Dec. 19) in Georgetown, TX.
The Pirates fell behind immediately as UMHB built a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game. SU fought back and managed to tie the game at 9-9 with 14:28 on the clock on a three-point play by Beth Thomas (Houston, TX/Clear Lake HS) that included a jumper in the paint and a free throw. The Crusaders led the rest of the half, though, as they jumped ahead by 11 thanks to a 15-4 run. SU answered with an 8-0 run to bring the score to 24-21 but UMHB came back with a three-pointer and jumper at close range for a 29-21 halftime lead.
Southwestern opened the half with a 10-2 run to tie the game at 31-31 less than five minutes in to the half. The Crusaders regained the lead and built it to six on a Kallie White layup. After another pair of ties, SU took its first lead of the game at 7:05 on a Kendal George (Winnie, TX/East Chambers HS) jump shot. SU held its largest lead of the night when a Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) put the Pirates ahead 47-44 with 6:37 to go.
Mary Hardin-Baylor wouldn't go away though, taking the lead for good thanks to a Shannon Barnes jumper in the paint that put the Crusaders ahead 54-52. Southwestern kept it close but UMHB made six free throws in the final 2:17 to hold on for the 60-56 final.
George led all players with 25 points and 12 rebounds for her third-straight double-double. The SU senior was 10-22 from the floor and 5-9 from the charity stripe while also adding two steals and one assist. Azizi finished 3-7 from the floor for seven points and was second on the team with six boards.
Sarah Warren (Argyle, TX/Argyle HS) and Priyanka Kainthla (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) both had three assists for the Pirates. Thomas finished with seven points while shooting 60 percent (3-5) from the floor.
Southwestern shot just 23.1 percent in the first half and bounced back by shooting at a 48 percent clip in the second stanza. For the game, the Pirates shot 32.8 percent from the floor and 21.7 percent from three-point range. UMHB held a 46-42 advantage in rebounds and had four blocks to the Pirates' two.
Southwestern next takes to the court on Thursday (Dec. 28) as the Southwestern Holiday Hoops Classic begins with the Pirates playing Concordia (IL) at 5:00 p.m. followed by #9 McMurry University against #10 University of Wisconsin-Stout at 7:00 p.m.
