Pirate Basketball to be Featured on D3Hoops.com as Conference Play Begins

The Southwestern University men's and women's basketball teams open Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on Friday (Dec. 1) with a pair of games on back to back days.

The Pirates will face off against Millsaps College on Friday night, with the women playing at 6:00 p.m. and the men following at 8:00 p.m. The next night, Rhodes College comes to Georgetown, TX with the women going at 6:00 p.m. and the men at 8:00 p.m.

The Pirate women are riding a three-game winning-streak that included an overtime win over the seventh-ranked team in the nation. SU is out-scoring its opponents by 11.5 points. The inside duo of Kendal George (Winnie, TX/East Chambers HS) and Natasha Azizi (Katy, TX/Cinco Ranch HS) has combined to average 34.6 points and 14.8 rebounds per game. Meanwhile, Kelli Hill (Plano, TX/Plano East HS) is shooting 45.5 percent from behind the three-point arc.

On the men's side, the team is 4-2 overall and 2-0 at home. Junior Matt Caplan (Houston, TX/University of Kansas) is leading Southwestern in most major statistical categories. He is averaging 16 points and six rebounds per game and has recorded 30 assists, eight steals and five blocks. Caplan is also shooting 65 percent from three-point range and 61.8 percent from the field.

The Majors men enter the game with a 3-2 record and are led in scoring by Edrick Montgomery who is averaging 19 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. He is currently fifth in the conference in scoring.

The Millsaps women currently own a 1-2 overall record. LaReina Adams is averaging a double-double on the year, scoring 19.3 points per game and leading the conference with 12 boards per game.

As for Rhodes, the Lynx women come in to the first weekend of conference play with a 3-2 record. Ashley Farrell and Crystal Jessee are both averaging in double-digits scoring on the year. Farrell is second in the SCAC with 19.6 points per game.

The men are 2-3 and have yet to play outside of Memphis, TN. The Lynx have the top-scorer in the conference in Cory Smith who is the only player averaging over 20 points per game.
