Box Score

The Southwestern University men's basketball team fought through three overtimes to knock off the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs 75-72 on Saturday (Nov. 18) night in Georgetown, TX.

The Pirates were in control throughout the first half, never trailing, and building their lead up to 11 on a free throw by junior Mike Powell (Houston, TX/Episcopal HS) with just over a minute left in the half. SU shot 50 percent in the first half and made five three-pointers.

In the second half, the Bulldogs came out strong with a 15-0 run to take a four-point lead in just under three and a half minutes. With multiple lead changes during the half, SU went up by three with 1:56 left to play on a Ben Schleif (San Antonio, TX/Reagan HS) lay-up. However, TLU's Josh Scott made a free throw with 1:05 to go and then drained a jumper with 35 seconds on the clock to send the game in to the first overtime.

Southwestern pulled ahead in the first 40 seconds of the period on a Powell jumper and built the lead to as many as five with a pair of Casey Gorder (San Antonio, TX/Texas Military Institute) free throws. Scott came up big once again for the Bulldogs, nailing a three with just three seconds on the clock.

In the second overtime, the Pirates led by four three different times but a pair of free throws and a Brandon Hughes lay-up tied the game at 66 to go to overtime number three. In the final overtime period, free throws put Southwestern ahead for good. Junior Matt Caplan (Houston, TX/University of Kansas) made one from the charity stripe and 30 seconds later, Powell made a pair of free throws to give SU a 75-72 lead. TLU then missed a pair of three-point attempts in the final seven seconds.

Schleif led the Pirates with a career-high 18 points on 7-12 shooting, including 3-5 from beyond the three-point arc. The junior guard added four rebounds and three steals. Caplan scored 17 and narrowly missed out on a double-double with nine rebounds. Caplan also had seven assists and two blocks.

Powell pitched in 16 points while first-year Anthony Cox (Flower Mound, TX/Flower Mound HS) dished out six assists along with three points and three assists. Gorder added eight points for the Bucs and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Pirates out-rebounded the Bulldogs 42-35 and out-shot them 50 percent to 36.9 percent. SU had to overcome 30 turnovers but recorded five blocks in the contest.

Southwestern plays again on Tuesday (Nov. 21) against the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys at 8:00 p.m. in Georgetown, TX.
