GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Freshman Katia Childs of Southwestern University women's tennis earned Southern Athletic Association Singles Athlete of the Week honors following a standout weekend that highlighted her impact in the Pirates' lineup.
Childs played a pivotal role in Southwestern's strong performances across two matches, beginning Saturday with a dominant showing in the Pirates' sweep of Schreiner University. She controlled play from start to finish, securing a convincing 6-0, 6-2 straight-set victory to help seal the team win.
The following morning, Childs delivered another clutch performance against nationally ranked Our Lady of the Lake University, the No. 20 team in the NAIA rankings. In a tightly contested battle, she fought through a first-set tiebreak loss before responding with a strong second set and closing out the match in a decisive super tiebreak, 6-7 (6), 6-2, 10-6. Her win accounted for Southwestern's lone point in the matchup and showcased her resilience against elite competition.
The weekly honor, awarded by the Southern Athletic Association, recognizes the conference's top singles performance and marks a significant achievement for Childs early in the spring season.
Childs' performances continue to set the tone for the Pirates as Southwestern builds momentum heading deeper into conference play.
