Women’s Tennis Falls Short in 3-4 Thriller at UMHB

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS — The Southwestern University women's tennis team traveled to Belton, Texas on Thursday afternoon to take on University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, ultimately falling to the Crusaders in a tightly contested 4-3 decision.

Doubles play proved to be the difference in the match, as Mary Hardin-Baylor claimed two of the three points to take an early lead. At No. 1 doubles, Daryl Locke and Isa Cepeda earned a strong 6-2 victory over Bailee Lane and Jolin Ha to put the Pirates on the board. However, the Crusaders responded at No. 2 doubles, where Breanna Taylor and Emma Nordin defeated Addison Powell and Kimberly Duncan 6-4. At No. 3, Avery Williams and Lori Bryan secured the doubles point for UMHB with a 6-1 win over Lilly Perkins and Katia Childs.

In singles action, Southwestern battled back to keep the match within reach. Kimberly Duncan was dominant at No. 3 singles, earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Bailee Lane. The Pirates added another point at No. 4 singles, where Lilly Perkins pushed her match to three sets before narrowly falling 4-6, 6-4, 0-7 in a tightly contested finish against Lori Bryan.

Southwestern University secured key straight-set wins at the top of the lineup. At No. 1 singles, Daryl Locke defeated Jolin Ha 6-2, 6-4, while Isa Cepeda earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Emma Nordin at No. 2 singles. At No. 6, Avery Williams topped Addison Powell 6-1, 6-0.

One of the most competitive matches of the afternoon came at No. 5 singles, where Katia Childs battled through a three-set thriller. After taking the first set 7-6, Childs ultimately fell, 7-6, 6-7, 0-7 to Breanna Taylor in a hard-fought contest.

Despite the narrow loss, the Pirates showed resilience throughout the lineup, competing point-for-point in a match that came down to the final courts.
