Box Score SAN ANTONIO - Southwestern Men's Basketball filled up the offensive stat sheet, but were unable to contain a dynamic nationally ranked Trinity University offense on Saturday night in the SAA opener, 94-74.
Southwestern and Trinity matched up for the first time as members of the SAA on the opening week of conference play. The Tigers inside attack proved to be the difference, dominating the opportunities at the line, going 29-36 and forcing the Pirates to shuffle rotations constantly. The Pirates bench was busy, scoring 38 points as Shugars, Batz, and Loder combined for 31.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Southwestern and Trinity matched for the 55th time as the Tigers led the series 39-15. The Pirates picked up a pivotal win before Christmas to end non-conference play at 6-5.
- Trinity entered the game ranked 24th nationally.
- Tonight's starting lineup featured senior Shobby Enakpene, junior Zach Gomez, junior Luke Mills, sophomore Aedan Lewis, and freshman Neo Franco.
- The Pirates committed early fouls which led to an early 12-5 deficit. Southwestern was forced to dive deep into the bench with 15 minutes still to play.
- However, the bench came out firing from beyond the arc as junior Zach Shugars knocked down a triple followed by two threes from freshman Sawyer Batz.
- Freshman Trevion Ogburn scored his first collegiate bucket with the steal and run out layup to take the 19-18 lead.
- The shot production went stale as the Tigers mounted a 12-2 run.
- Batz continued to break the Tigers defense down with eight points in the half. However, Southwestern struggled to keep Trinity off the line, trailing 44-35 at halftime.
- The Tigers went 18-21 from the charity strike, while the Pirates only had two attempts. Southwestern only committed two turnovers, but were out rebounded 25-18. 21 of the 44 Pirate points were scored off the bench as Shugars and Batz combined for 17.
- Mills committed a crucial third and fourth foul to start the second half as Trinity expanded their lead to 58-39.
- Senior Sebastian Loder entered the game and hit three big triples.
- Freshman Kalen Williamson cut the deficit to 81-69 on a baseline three, while Gomez contributed 12 second half points with six minutes left.
- However, the Pirates failed to stop the bleeding of the Tiger offense to drop game one in the SAA.
GAME NOTES
- Southwestern was out rebounded 54-39 on the night. However, the big disparity was the Tigers 36 free throws opposed to the Pirates 11.
- The Pirates manufactured plenty of attempts with 20 offensive rebounds, but finished 13-48 from beyond the arc.
- Shugars and Gomez led the way in scoring with 12 points each.
- Lewis totaled eight boards on the night with 17 in the past two games.
- Mills caused havoc with ten points and six boards, but picked up four fouls early.

Southwestern has the opportunity to bounce back next weekend, hosting Berry College on Friday night at 7:30. On Sunday, Oglethrope University also comes to Georgetown for the first time in the SAA at 1 p.m.
