GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - Freshman guard Neela Castillo (Kyle, Texas) has been named SAA Player of the Week after turning in a historic and record-breaking weekend for Southwestern University women's basketball.
Castillo etched her name into the program record book on Sunday afternoon against Sewanee, erupting for a program-record 39 points to surpass the previous single-game scoring mark set in 2014. The freshman was lights-out from beyond the arc, connecting on 8-of-11 three-point attempts, while shooting an impressive 75 percent from the field. She also made her presence felt defensively, finishing the contest with four rebounds and a career-high eight steals. With her eight made three-pointers, Castillo became the first NCAA Division III freshman this season to knock down eight or more threes in a single game.
Earlier in the weekend, Castillo continued her strong play against Centre, scoring 17 points to go along with three rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Across the two games, the Kyle, Texas native showcased her ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor, combining elite scoring with active defense and efficient shooting.
Castillo's historic performances and consistent production were instrumental to the Pirates' weekend and have established her as one of the conference's premier young talents.
