GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Pirates sent the lone senior, Katelyn
Gola, away from her home field for the last time in style with two
wins, 3-1 and 7-1, to complete the sweep of Hendrix College.
After a scoreless first in game one Hendrix loaded the bases
with two outs, attempting to post the first run of the game. Kara
Solomon worked Vaughan to a full count but drew a walk to push one
run across the plate giving Hendrix a 1-0 lead after one and a half
innings.
Southwestern equaled things up in the bottom half of the inning
when Lyndsy Maus helped her own cause with a single to centerfield
bringing in pinch runner Taylor Blair.
Hendrix threatened again in the third but Maus worked her way
out of the jam and SU took advantage at the plate taking the lead
on a sacrifice fly to deep left field by Blair Wallace that brought
in Amanda Ambrose. After three innings of play Southwestern had the
2-1 advantage.
Both teams got runners in scoring position in the ensuing
innings but neither could drive them home until Haley Hughes was
brought home on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Maus,
extending the Pirates' lead to two, 3-1, heading into the
final inning.
The Warriors placed runners on base in the final inning but Maus
got the final batters to fly out to end the game and earn the
victory.
Southwestern had nine hits including a 3-3 performance from
Hughes while HC had five hits by five different players.
Hendrix took an early lead in game two with a homerun by Byler
in the second inning. Once again the Pirates responded, this time
scoring three runs with two outs in their half on the inning.
Maus scored one more to help herself on the mound with a single
up the middle driving in Hughes from second base, extending the
lead to three 4-1.
The Warriors continued to press, loading the bases with two outs
in the fourth inning, but Maus forced a ground out to Katelyn Gola,
once again holding the Warriors at bay. SU pushed three more runs
across in their half of the inning to move their lead to six, 7-1.
Southwestern closed out the game by holding Hendrix scoreless in
the final five innings, sweeping the series.
Hughes once again performed well at the plate with a 3-4
performance. Copeland led Hendrix with two hits.
Southwestern has their final non-conference game of the year as
they head to Old Settler's Park to take on Concordia on Tuesday
beginning at 5:00 pm.
