BATS ARE HOT FOR PIRATES IN DAY ONE OF CONFERENCE OPENER

March 28, 2009

Box Score

Georgetown, Texas - It may have been unseasonably cool on Saturday, but the Pirates' bats were as hot as ever. Southwestern defeated Hendrix in the first two games of their conference opener at Taylor Sanders Field in Georgetown, Texas 12-4 and 6-4.

The Pirates batted around to start their offensive half of the game and scored six runs in the process. SS Quincy Meeker led off with a single into left center and then ended at third after a passed ball and stolen base. Katelyn Gola drilled one to deep center field with two strikes to bring in Meeker on the sacrifice fly for the Pirates first run of the game.

P Kaitlyn Pavlicek singled to center with two outs to start another run for Southwestern. 1B Kat Hoover reached on a walk and DP Aly Pulver followed with an RBI single to right field that brought in a hustling Pavlicek from second base and advanced Hoover to third. CF Taylor Turpin put a slow roller in play to short and beat out the throw to first for an RBI single that brought in Hoover and gave Southwestern a 3-0 lead. Ambrose battled to a 3-2 count and earned a walk to load the bases for C Bre Lewis with two outs. Lewis capitalized and hit a blooper to right field that was misplayed and cleared the runners and put the Pirates up 6-0 after one.

Three Pirate errors in the second inning coupled with two Warrior hits allowed Hendrix to close the gap to four, 6-2. Southwestern responded with one more in the bottom of the inning to push their lead back up to five, 7-2.

SU scored two runs in the third and one in the fourth on a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Lewis to give the Pirates an eight run lead, 10-2, after four.

Hendrix scored two in the fifth on a 2-run homerun by Sara Hunter to postpone the run rule loss. Southwestern would eventually complete the run-rule win with a triple by Ambrose to bring in Turpin. Ambrose scored on the same play after a dropped relay by Hendrix to close out the game 12-4.

Game two started out similar to game one with the Pirates batting around and posting six runs in the first, only this time they did it with two outs.

Hendrix posted one run in the third and three in the fourth to cut SU's lead to two, 6-4. The scored remain the same with SU needing just four batters to close out the game and take the game two victory.

Pavlicek earned the win in game one and Lyndsy Maus captured the game two win. Turpin had a monster day at the plate for the Pirates going 5-6 with four runs, two RBI's and one walk.

The win improves SU to 11-11 overall and moves them into third place in the conference at 2-0. Hendrix falls to 10-13 on the year and 1-5 in SCAC action. The Pirates and Warriors square off again tomorrow for a double header beginning at noon to close out the series.
